6th instant enclosing a copy of a despatch from the

freer administering

the Government

of Hongkong with reference to the tax on pre-

pared opium in Kwangtung and enquiring whether any

further communication on this subject has been re-

ceived from His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Peking

since his telegram of the 10th ultimo.

I am to enclose copies of a telegram which was

addressed to Mr. Max Müller on the 2nd. instant and

of his reply from which it will be seen that he is

continuing to press the Chinese Government to come to

a satisfactory settlement of the matter.
